The use of Megaselia abdita (Diptera: Phoridae) in forensic entomology.

This case study demonstrates the importance of the Phorid, Megaselia abdita (Schmitz), as an indicator for post-mortem interval estimation in criminal investigations involving forensic entomology where it is usually the more frequently occurring Calliphorids that are most useful. A case example is discussed where the temperatures were low for the period of time the deceased was missing.

Surface ultrastructure of third-instar Megaselia scalaris (Diptera: Phoridae).

We describe some ultrastructure of the third-instar Megaselia scalaris (Diptera: Phoridae) using scanning electron microscopy, with the cephalic segment, anterior spiracle and posterior spiracle being emphasized. This study provides the taxonomic information of this larval species, which may be useful to differentiate from other closely-related species.

Three new species of Megaselia Rondani (Diptera, Phoridae) from mailand China.

Three new species, Megaselia cornipalpis sp. nov., M. lacunitarsalis sp. nov. and M. trimacula sp. nov. are described and illustrated from mainland China. A checklist of species of genus Megaselia recorded from mainland China is provided.

Extravagant female sexual display in a Megaselia Rondani species (Diptera: Phoridae)

The behavior of females of a species of Megaselia is described. Females perch on leaves and occasionally "dance", fluttering their wings while rapidly running on the leaf surface. During this dance, they evert bright white abdominal sacs that apparently constitute part of a visual display to attract males. The evolutionary basis of these behaviors is discussed.

A new species group in Megaselia, the lucifrons group, with description of a new species (Diptera, Phoridae)

With 1,400 described species, Megaselia is one of the most species-rich genera in the animal kingdom, and at the same time one of the least studied. An important obstacle to taxonomic progress is the lack of knowledge concerning the phylogenetic structure within the genus. Classification of Megaselia at the level of subgenus is incomplete although Schmitz addressed several groups of species in ...
